The APS Certificate: The Step Indian Students Cannot Skip

Germany Study Visa Requirements 2026: What Indian Students Must Prepare
Your university acceptance letter is cause for a celebration; however, it is also the beginning point of yet another journey - the German National Visa (Type D) process through the German Embassy or VFS Global in India. Unlike the admission process where timelines vary per university, the visa process has fixed requirements and therefore offers zero flexibility in terms of planning.
The Blocked Account: The Financial Requirement That Decides Your Visa
The only thing required for every student to apply for a German study visa is proof that they are able to support themselves financially while studying in Germany (i.e., they have enough money for accommodation, food, transport etc.). The standard way to prove this to a German consulate is to open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) where you can place your entire living allowance prior to attending your visa appointment. For 2026, you will need to provide €11,904 to complete your visa application, which is approximately €992/month for the 12 months that you’ll be living in Germany next year. This amount is determined by the German Federal Foreign Office and was last updated on 01 Jan 2025.
You will always have access to your money. After arriving in Germany, once you have activated your regular bank account, you can start taking €992/month from your Sperrkonto for living expenses such as rent, food, transportation, and health insurance. There are several companies that provide blocked accounts for Indian students, including Expatrio, Fintiba, Coracle, and Deutsche Bank; using an unrecognised provider is an extremely common, and completely avoidable, cause of German student visa refusals.
Make sure to open your Sperrkonto a minimum of 6–8 weeks before your appointment at the German embassy as it takes that much time for international funds (sent from India) to pass according to the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) of India. If you have received an award of a full DAAD or recognised foundation scholarship equal to at least €992/month then you can substitute your official award letter for a Sperrkonto. You’ll need to verify this with either the German Embassy in New Delhi or the nearest Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) centre.
What Else Goes Into the Visa Application

It is common for Indian students to work as HiWis (Hilfskraft) in the universities as a student assistant and receive a salary between €12 to €15 per hour. However, all student workers will be paid at a minimum rate of pay of €8.50, which would apply to HiWi jobs. Many Indian students who have HiWi jobs also do thesis research while earning wages and developing job contacts for employment after graduating.
Therefore, you should schedule your visa interview as soon as you receive your acceptance letter. Do not wait until you have collected all of the necessary documentation to book your visa interview.
Working While Studying: What German Law Permits
In Germany, foreign students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year (legally defined as a maximum of 140 full days or 280 half-days per year). No separate work permit is needed, and full-time work is allowed during the university holidays.
The HiWi (Hilfskraft) job is the most common type of employment for Indian nationals. A HiWi is a university assistant job funded by the university department, with the pay ranging from €12 to €15 per hour. All student workers in Germany are subject to the federal minimum wage.
